Refilling without the plastic
A 12kg sack, two glass canisters and a scoop will outlast forty pouches — and cost roughly a fifth as much per kilo.
Single-serve packaging is the most expensive way to buy anything. For dry food it is also the least fresh, because the convenience you pay for is a barrier layer you throw away.
The setup
Two 4-litre canisters, one in use and one sealed. Decant from the sack into the sealed one, and only open it when the first runs dry. Food meets air twice instead of forty times.
What it costs
About €60 to set up. It pays for itself in eleven weeks for a medium dog, and it removes a recurring pile of foil from your kitchen forever.
